What to see and do in Favara

Favara
Village
Favara is a municipality of the Ribera Baixa, in Valencia, on the northern slope of the sierra de Corbera. Its name comes, according to Joan Coromines, from the Arabic fawwara ('the spring'), on account of its water springs. It depended on the castell del Barranc and, from 1297, on the lordship of the abbots of Valldigna; from that period survives the hermitage of San Lorenzo, on a hill, built of masonry and Arab tile. Settled by Moriscos, it was left depopulated after their expulsion in 1609. It also preserves an 18th-century parish church, and on its mountain opens the Cueva de la Galera, with Bronze Age remains; it celebrates its falles on 20 March and the Vera Cruz on 14 August.
Festivities of la Vera Creu y la Divina Aurora de Favara
Activity
Favara celebrates its patron saint, the Vera Creu, on the 14th of August ('the main festivity'), and the Divina Aurora the day before, the 13th of August, known as the 'day of the boys'.
Church of San Antonio Abad de Favara
Monument
The parish church of Favara, built in the 18th century, one of the municipality's main religious monuments.
Hermitage of San Lorenzo de Favara
Monument
A small rectangular hermitage on a hill above Favara, with walls of stone and rubble masonry and a pitched roof of Arab tiles, of great constructional plainness.
Cave of la Galera de Favara
Nature
Archaeological site with difficult access, located in a Mediterranean mountain setting near Favara, in the Cavall Bernat range, next to the Pla de la Simeta, with material from the Bronze Age, from the 2nd-1st millennium BC, and of Iberian chronology. It is a wide-mouthed cave, with a pronounced dip running north-east to south-west and a floor covered with large blocks of stone. Fragments of flint, hand-made pottery and wheel-thrown Iberian pottery have been found there, now held in the Alzira Municipal Museum.
