What to see and do in Barxeta

Barxeta
Village
Barxeta is a municipality of La Costera, in Valencia, situated at the eastern end of the district, in a valley of hillocks and low hills crossed by the Barcheta stream, between the serreta de Manuel to the north and the Mondúver massif to the east. It has 1,578 inhabitants (INE 2025). Of Muslim origin -it was an alquería of the territory of Xàtiva-, it was conquered by James I, who gave it to the Valencian knight Pere Zapata, and managed to become independent of Xàtiva in 1574. In 1535 its mosque was converted into a church and in 1609 its 46 Morisco families were expelled; the village was resettled by fifteen old-Christian settlers from the district and from Majorca. In 1644 it was raised to a barony in the person of Francisco Martínez de Marcilla. It maintains today a production of sheep's cheese awarded prizes in competitions.
Muslim origin of Barxeta
Curiosity
Barxeta originated as a Muslim alquería (farmstead) belonging to the municipality of Xàtiva, conquered by James I, who granted it to the Valencian knight Pere Zapata. In 1488 it passed into the hands of the lords of la Tallada, of Italian origin, and in 1574 the village achieved independence from Xàtiva. Following the forced conversions, the mosque was turned into a church in 1535; in 1609, 46 Morisco families were expelled from the town, and after that loss the village was repopulated with Christian settlers. Barxeta lies at the easternmost end of the La Costera region.

Food and drink
Barxeta maintains an artisan production of sheep's milk cheese, with various curings and awards at national and international competitions. It rests on the sheep farming that still grazes the mountains surrounding the municipal district.
