What to see and do in Casas Bajas

Casas Bajas
Village
Casas Bajas is a municipality of El Rincón de Ademuz, in the province of Valencia, with around 158 inhabitants and legally recognised Spanish-language predominance. It sits at 690 metres above sea level, on the right bank of the río Turia, with the río Ebrón as a nearby tributary, at the foot of the monte Pinar Llano; its name formerly distinguished this village, downstream on the río Turia, from neighbouring Casas Altas. In the mid-19th century, according to Madoz, it had close to two hundred houses, a square where a cemetery had previously stood, some thirty threshing floors and five freshwater springs. It became independent as its own municipality on 5 June 1838, having previously been a hamlet of Ademuz. In its surroundings the remains of an Iberian tower-house from the 6th to the 2nd centuries BC have been found.

Bonfires of St. Anthony Abbot of Casas Bajas
Activity
The Hoguericas de San Antonio Abad are the patronal festival of Casas Bajas, in the Valencian comarca of the Rincón de Ademuz. They are celebrated over four days starting on 16 January, in honor of San Antonio Abad. During those days the traditional bonfires are lit in the streets of the village, and processions, competitions and the blessing of animals take place.
Turia River through Casas Bajas
Nature
Stretch of the river Turia by Casas Bajas (El Rincón de Ademuz, Valencia), popular for rafting and other river activities. The river crosses the municipality from north to south, first flowing through a fertile vega before narrowing into a deep gorge; near the village it is crossed by a modern reinforced-concrete bridge, which replaced an old 57-foot-long wooden plank bridge. The Turia and its tributaries form here one of the best-preserved river ecosystems in the whole Valencian Community.
Festivities of Casas Bajas
Activity
The festival of El Salvador, patron saint of Casas Bajas, is held from 1 to 6 August with religious events, verbenas and activities for all ages; it is the first summer festival in the whole of El Rincón de Ademuz.
Parish Church of the Saviour
Monument
19th-century neoclassical church, the parish temple of the hamlet of Casas Bajas, in the Rincón de Ademuz. The temple was built from 1773 onward on a small hermitage which, before Casas Bajas's separation from Ademuz in 1838, was dependent on that town; its bell tower was added as early as 1857. The current neoclassical altarpiece, the work of Sofía Martínez Hurtado with carving by Antonio Salarich, was made in 1976 to replace the original movable heritage, destroyed at the start of the Civil War, among it the main altarpiece from the convent of San Guillermo in Castielfabib.
