What to see and do in Casas Altas

Casas Altas
Village
Casas Altas is a municipality of El Rincón de Ademuz, in the province of Valencia, at 714 metres above sea level next to the río Turia, on whose bank rises the sierra del Magallón. It was first called Casas del Río Altas and was a hamlet dependent on Ademuz until, after the boundary settlement agreed in Vallanca on 22 November 1844 by the arbiters Joaquín Pérez and Baltasar Adalid, it became an independent municipality. Its church, from the 17th and 18th centuries, is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and may have originated from a small 1615 hermitage, with a two-bay bell-gable and Arab-tile roofing; at its festival the residents carry a large black poplar on their shoulders from the bed of the río Turia to plant it in the square. It lives off dry and irrigated farming and sheep-raising, and has 118 inhabitants.
The Planting of the Poplar of Casas Altas
Curiosity
Ancestral ritual of Casas Altas, in the Rincón de Ademuz, linked to the Pascua Florida of late May or early June. The poplar is planted in the plaza de la Iglesia (today plaza de Serafín Manzano), at the foot of the bell tower, and remains there until the Assumption of the Virgin, on 14 August. It is related to propitiatory rites of agrarian fertility typical of spring festive-tree celebrations. The ritual unfolds in four phases: young men select and fell a poplar from the riverbanks, strip and clean it, carry it on their shoulders to the square and plant it with ropes and supports. In the past a live rabbit was hung from its top, tied by the legs, like a greasy pole, for some young man to climb up and untie it; today it is replaced by a rabbit skin stuffed with straw.
Trail of las fuentes de Casas Altas
Nature
Casas Altas, in El Rincón de Ademuz, preserves several traditional water points, such as the monumental fuente de El Tornajo at the junction of calles Barraca, Abadía and Calvario, and the fuente de la Balsa, which supplies the village with drinking water; routes such as that to the mirador de La Muela or to Fuente Bellido cross these areas starting from the bridge over the Turia.
Festival of la Trinidad de Casas Altas
Activity
Traditional festival in Casas Altas in which the villagers choose a large poplar from the bed of the River Turia and carry it shoulder-high to the square, where it is planted as a festive symbol.
Church of la Santísima Trinidad
Monument
The church of the Holy Trinity, built in the 17th and 18th centuries, on Plaza Serafín Manzano in Casas Altas, began as a small hermitage around 1615, a date that appears on the bell-gable of the façade, and attained the status of parish and independent vicariate on 12 March 1772. In 1837 a taller section was added at the head, with another bell-gable, and half a century later the bell tower was built. During the Revolution of 1936 it was despoiled: eight altars and twelve images were destroyed, along with crosses, candlesticks and ornaments. Restored around 1990, with its bells restored in 2003, it belonged to the diocese of Segorbe until 1960, the year it passed under that of Valencia. Its façade, of rubble masonry reinforced with ashlar, retains the doorway of the old hermitage.
The separation of Casas Altas
Historical milestone
The township was constituted as a municipality independent of Ademuz after arbitrators meeting at Vallanca in November 1844 agreed the demarcation of the districts of the two places.
