Hermitage of San Rafael de La Nucia Monument · Nucia, la, La Marina Baixa, Alicante The hermitage of San Rafael in La Nucia (La Marina Baixa), with a Latin-cross plan and measuring 15.16 by 5.75 metres, was completed in 1888 at its present site, within the town centre and surrounded by a garden of cypresses. It houses a distinctive image of San Rafael dressed as a traditional pilgrim of Compostela, the work of the post-war Valencian religious sculptor José María Ponsoda, intended to symbolise the saint as patron of walkers, since La Nucia was a place of passage toward the inland areas.
