What to see and do in Teulada

Teulada
Village
Teulada is a municipality of the Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante, with two population centres: Teulada itself, inland, and Moraira, on the coast. Its territory preserves a human trace from the Upper Palaeolithic, visible in the Cova de la Cendra, as well as Bronze Age and Iberian-period sites; in Roman times, near the city of Dianium, agricultural villae multiplied. Conquered in the mid-13th century, Teulada was then an Andalusi alquería and Moraira just a natural harbour; between 1270 and 1280 the first large contingent of Christian settlers arrived. To defend this coast from Barbary landings, a semicircular armed fort was built in 1742 on the beach of Moraira, fitted with gun embrasures and a permanent garrison.
The fort of Moraira
Historical milestone
The semicircular fort raised over the beach in 1742 armed the cove against Barbary landings. With its gun ports and a small permanent garrison, it protected the residents who came down from the town to work the lands of the coast.
