What to see and do in Gata de Gorgos

Gata de Gorgos
Village
Gata de Gorgos, known simply as Gata until 1916, is a municipality in the comarca of La Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante, with a craft tradition in wicker and cane, crossed from west to east by the Gorgos river and dominated to the south by the Sierra del Castellar. It was a Muslim alquería of the taifa of Denia until its Christian conquest in 1250; after the expulsion of the moriscos in 1609, who made up the majority of its population, the town specialised in the production of scalded raisins and in making esparto or llata baskets, originally used to transport them. It now has 6773 inhabitants.
Palm and wicker basketry
Historical milestone
The town lived for generations on the working of palm, wicker and esparto: baskets, chairs, panniers and blinds that were sold throughout the comarca and shipped from the port. The workshops are still lined up along the main street, today open to the visitor.
