What to see and do in Calp

Calp
Village
Calp is a municipality of the Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante, with 27,616 inhabitants (INE 2025), dominated by the Peñón de Ifach, a rocky mass 332 m high declared a natural park in 1987 and a symbol of the Costa Blanca. Salt has been extracted in its salt flats since Roman times, when its coastal location favoured the establishment of garum and salted-fish factories around the site of the Baños de la Reina. The earliest Iberian settlements were established on the high ground overlooking the territory, among them the Peñón de Ifach itself and the Castellet del Mascarat. The Christian conquest is placed by historians between 1240 and 1254; after the uprising of the Muslim leader Al-Azraq, the Mudejar population of the territory was expelled and replaced by Christian settlers.
Peñón de Ifach
Nature
A rocky massif 332 metres high that rises in isolation on the northern coast of Alicante, in the municipality of Calp, and forms one of the last spurs of the Baetic mountain ranges. Declared a natural park by the Generalitat Valenciana on 19 January 1987, with an initial area of 45 hectares enlarged to 53.3 in 2015, it is one of the symbols of the Costa Blanca. Its enormous limestone bulk drops abruptly towards the sea and remains joined to the mainland by an isthmus; it was used as a geodetic vertex for the triangulation of Spain. A path leads to the summit, from where on clear days Ibiza, Formentera and Cape Santa Pola can be seen. It harbours endemic rupicolous vegetation, such as the Ifach silene, the rock scabious and the Valencian horseshoe vetch.
Festivities of Calp
Activity
Calp's Moors and Christians patronal festival honours the Santísimo Cristo del Sudor, whose feast day, 22 October, is the main day of a week of religious and festival events.
Banys de la Reina de Calp
Historical milestone
Beside the sea at Calp, pools carved into the rock survive, the remains of a Roman villa and of a factory devoted to salting fish and fish farming that operated between the 1st and 4th centuries. The complex includes baths, mosaic pavements and a necropolis area.
