What to see and do in Sant Joan d'Alacant

Sant Joan d'Alacant
Village
Sant Joan d'Alacant is a municipality within the Alicante-Elche metropolitan area, 8 km from the capital, with 23,915 inhabitants; within its territory lie the Health Sciences Campus of the Miguel Hernández University and the San Juan de Alicante University Hospital. Regarded as the sentimental and geographical heart of the Huerta of Alicante, it was one of the local universities or councils that administered that irrigated plain for centuries, and did not attain full municipal status until the liberal reforms of the 19th century. Recent excavations have found Iberian pottery from the 4th century BC and Roman remains from the 4th-5th centuries AD. It preserves several hermitages along its historic route, among them that of Santa Ana, evidence of an origin going back to the 14th century.
Festivities of Sant Joan d'Alacant
Activity
The patronal festivities of Sant Joan d'Alacant, from 20 to 24 June in honour of San Juan Bautista, plant their bonfires on the 18th and 19th and culminate on the 24th with a mascletà, a procession and the cremà of the festive monuments. The tradition of planting fogueres, begun in neighbouring Alicante in the 19th century and organised with its present-day features since 1928 based on the Falles valencianas, reached Sant Joan d'Alacant in 1969, among the first towns in the area to join the celebration.

The universitats of the market garden
Historical milestone
The huerta of Alicante was administered for centuries through universidades, local councils with their own jurors that depended on the city. Sant Joan was one of them and did not attain full status as a municipality until the liberal reforms of the nineteenth century.
