Between 25 and 27 June 1874, in the area of Monte Muro near Abárzuza, the largest engagement of the Third Carlist War was fought. Although they outnumbered the Carlists two to one, the Republican troops were defeated, and their general, Manuel Gutiérrez de la Concha, Marqués del Duero, died from a shot received on the afternoon of the 27th.
