What to see and do in Luzaide/Valcarlos

Luzaide/Valcarlos
Village
Luzaide/Valcarlos, at 365 m altitude, is one of the few Spanish localities located on the northern slope of the Pyrenees: its river flows into the Adour basin instead of the Spanish one. Its Romance name recalls Charlemagne, the protagonist of the Battle of Roncesvalles in 778 that inspired the Song of Roland, while Luzaide, in Basque, would mean "long road," alluding to the valley's droving routes. It has 336 inhabitants (INE 2025) and belongs to the Basque-speaking area, with a Low Navarrese dialect shared with neighboring localities in France.
Luzaide/Valcarlos, puerta del Camino de Santiago
Historical milestone
Through Luzaide/Valcarlos runs the variant of the Camino Francés that crosses the Pyrenees from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port without passing through the Ibañeta pass, making it the first Navarrese locality for a good part of the pilgrims. The municipality maintains a pilgrims' hostel.
Bolantes de Luzaide/Valcarlos
Activity
On Easter Sunday, the dantzaris of Luzaide/Valcarlos go through the streets of the village dressed in traditional costumes, dancing the Bolant-dantzak and the Jauziak, dances known together as the Bolantes.
