What to see and do in Hiriberri/Villanueva de Aezkoa

Hiriberri/Villanueva de Aezkoa
Village
Despite its name, which suggests a recent founding, Hiriberri/Villanueva de Aezkoa is one of the oldest settlements in the Aezkoa valley: traces of human presence date back to the Neolithic, and the first written mention, in the Libro de Fuegos (Hearth Book) of Navarre, dates from 1366. At 926 m altitude, it has 96 inhabitants (INE 2025). It was one of the last Spanish localities where the Navarrese dialect of Basque was spoken, and its residents are known by the nicknames "cipotes" and "katedratikos," referring to the local craftsmen who made wooden chairs.
