Luzaide/Valcarlos Village · Luzaide/Valcarlos, Pirineo, Navarra Luzaide/Valcarlos, at 365 m altitude, is one of the few Spanish localities located on the northern slope of the Pyrenees: its river flows into the Adour basin instead of the Spanish one. Its Romance name recalls Charlemagne, the protagonist of the Battle of Roncesvalles in 778 that inspired the Song of Roland, while Luzaide, in Basque, would mean "long road," alluding to the valley's droving routes. It has 336 inhabitants (INE 2025) and belongs to the Basque-speaking area, with a Low Navarrese dialect shared with neighboring localities in France. 778 Photo: A1AA1A (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Luzaide/Valcarlos
