Cabanillas de la Sierra
Village
Cabanillas de la Sierra is a municipality of around 961 inhabitants in the Sierra Norte of Madrid, on a small rocky spur of the Cuerda Larga. Documented since 1152, when Alfonso VII mentioned it while setting the boundaries of Madrid, in 1593 it obtained a Real Carta Ejecutoria that freed it from the lordship of Uceda and made it an independent Villa Real, after a long lawsuit that dragged on until 1621. Its position on the Camino Real de Burgos, also crossed by three livestock droving routes, made it for centuries a resting place for muleteers and transhumant flocks, with inns and wayside hostelries serving travellers. It preserves a Baroque church from the 17th century and the Puente de los Arrieros, from 1783, and every 8 December it lights the thyme bonfire of La Luminaria.
