El Vellón
Village
El Vellón is a municipality of about 2,281 inhabitants in the comarca of the Sierra Norte, 48 kilometres from Madrid, which besides the main centre also includes that of El Espartal, five kilometres to the east towards Torrelaguna. Its municipal area, with predominantly mountainous relief, descends from the 945 metres of the Atalaya de Venturada, in the northwest, to 645 metres on the banks of the río Jarama, which marks the boundary with Talamanca de Jarama; the town itself stands at 888 metres. The municipality was known for its gypsum and lime quarries, and its parish church is dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady. In the mid-19th century it had 883 inhabitants, and today it is connected to Madrid by four bus lines, three of which link up with the Plaza de Castilla interchange.
