What to see and do in Tres Cantos

Tres Cantos
Village
Tres Cantos is a new town in the Community of Madrid, planned on the drawing board in the manner of the English new towns, which received its first residents in 1982 and split off from Colmenar Viejo in 1991; it now has around 54,000 inhabitants. Its name comes from a geodetic point so called after the medieval boundary markers that marked the limit between the territories of Segovia and Madrid, at a time when Colmenar Viejo belonged to the former. The site, between El Goloso and Colmenar Viejo, was chosen because it had an aquifer capable of supplying the city; Torrejón, by contrast, was ruled out because of its proximity to the American military base. Located in the Upper Manzanares Basin Regional Park, it is one of the cities with the most trees per inhabitant in Spain.
New town of Tres Cantos
Curiosity
Born in 1976 as one of the country's first Urgent Urban Development Schemes, it was planned following the model of the English new towns and was not separated from Colmenar Viejo until 1991, when it became a municipality in its own right.
First stage of the Camino de Madrid
Activity
Tres Cantos closes the first day of the Jacobean branch that sets out from Madrid, some twenty-five kilometres of trail; from here the route continues towards Colmenar Viejo and Manzanares el Real before crossing the range by the Fuenfría pass.
Central Park of Tres Cantos
Nature
Forty-five hectares in the heart of this planned town, with a large artificial lake full of birds and fish and a themed garden divided into twelve settings: rose garden, palm grove, bamboo, conifers, aromatic plants and rockery.
Park of los Alcornoques
Nature
A woodland park of thirty hectares where 967 pines and more than 1,400 holm oaks and cork oaks have been counted, together with junipers and lavender typical of Mediterranean scrub; it is walked on dirt tracks from Avenida de Almenara.
The separation of Tres Cantos
Curiosity
Conceived as an urgent town-planning scheme under the decree of 1970 and inspired by the British new towns, the town took in its first residents in 1982 and did not separate from Colmenar Viejo until 21 March 1991.
Parish church of Santa Teresa de Jesús
Monument
Designed by Andrés Perea Ortega together with José Manuel Palao and Julián Franco, it translates into its plan the spirituality of Saint Teresa's Interior Castle: a white wall encloses the whole plot and leaves inside an enclosed garden in the manner of a medieval monastery.
South Park of Tres Cantos
Nature
A woodland park of thirty hectares on the southern edge of the town, conceived as a transition between the residential superblocks and the open countryside; it also holds allotment plots drawn by lot among residents.
Technology Park of Madrid
Curiosity
It grew out of the agreements signed in 1985 and 1986 between IMADE and Tres Cantos S.A., and close to eighty companies working in telecommunications electronics, space engineering, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals set up on its 28.4 hectares.
Tres Cantos separates from Colmenar Viejo
Historical milestone
The city, planned in 1970 as an urgent town-planning operation to decongest Madrid and inhabited since 1982, became the youngest municipality in the region on separating from Colmenar Viejo by regional decree.
