What to see and do in Torrejón de Ardoz

Torrejón de Ardoz
Village
Torrejón de Ardoz is a city in the Community of Madrid, in the Corredor del Henares, with around 143,000 inhabitants. Its name recalls a medieval watchtower and the Ardoz stream, which crosses it on the east side and goes underground as it enters the city. 19 kilometers from Madrid and near Barajas Airport, it sits in the Henares floodplain, with part of its territory in the Southeast Regional Park. Its church of San Juan Evangelista, extended until 1784 with three naves and a dome, holds paintings by Claudio Coello, and La Casa Grande, a former late-medieval Jesuit manor house, houses an extensive museum of Byzantine icons. Its climate, continental Mediterranean, brings cold winters with frequent frosts and summers exceeding an average high of 33 degrees in July.
Europa Park
Activity
Parque Europa, in Torrejón de Ardoz, opened on 3 September 2010 as an expansion and improvement of the old park along the Ardoz stream, at a cost of between 12 and 15 million euros. Across its 23 hectares, with 5,000 trees, 60,000 shrubs and three lakes, it brings together fourteen scale replicas of European monuments - from the Puerta de Alcalá and the Eiffel Tower to the Atomium, the Fontana di Trevi and the Belém Tower - and an original section of the Berlin Wall donated free of charge by the city council of the German capital. It also has 23 other marked points of interest, including picnic areas, themed squares, viewpoints and children's areas, as well as educational activities and guided tours, among them an interactive exhibition on the human body.
The Great House of Torrejón
Monument
Farmhouse that the Jesuits used to administer the revenues of the Colegio Imperial of Madrid and which was a Guardia Civil barracks until 1974; today it is a hotel and cultural centre and holds a collection of more than 1,200 Byzantine icons.
Church of San Juan Evangelista
Monument
An archpriest church built from the sixteenth century onward on the plaza Mayor of Torrejón de Ardoz, the municipality's main religious building, whose patron saint is precisely San Juan Evangelista; it began as a smaller structure with two naves and two chapels, which a major renovation around 1784 enlarged into the basilical plan with three naves and a dome that it has today. It holds a 1675 canvas by Claudio Coello, one of the great painters of the Madrid Baroque, depicting the martyrdom of its patron saint.
Bridge of hierro sobre el Henares de Torrejón
Monument
An 1889 metal structure thrown across the River Henares, its design indebted to the Eiffel school; out of service for decades, it is one of the few pieces of 19th-century engineering preserved in the Henares corridor.
The Battle of Torrejón de Ardoz
Historical milestone
The Moderate troops of Narváez defeated here, on 22 July 1843, those of General Seoane, loyal to Espartero, with barely a hundred wounded between the two sides. The result opened the Moderate Decade and sent the regent into exile.
