What to see and do in Velilla de San Antonio

Velilla de San Antonio
Village
Velilla de San Antonio is a village in the Community of Madrid, in the Jarama floodplain, within the Southeast Regional Park, with around 14,000 inhabitants. Archaeological sites in the area show that the place has been steadily inhabited since the second half of the 1st century, as confirmed by finds of terra sigillata studied in 1991 by the archaeologist Zarzalejos Prieto. Its three lagoons — El Raso, Picón de los Conejos and El Soto —, formed from old gravel pits, are listed as protected wetlands and serve as a refuge for numerous birds, especially in winter and during migration. The municipality, recognized in 2004 by UNICEF as a Child-Friendly City, takes part in an environmental education program centered on these wetlands.

Nature
El Raso, Picón de los Conejos and El Soto are sheets of water that emerged from former aggregate extraction in the Jarama floodplain; today they are protected wetlands of the Southeast Regional Park and a refuge for birds on migration.
