What to see and do in Cunit

Cunit
Village
Cunit is a coastal town on the Costa Daurada, in the Baix Penedès comarca, province of Tarragona, situated at 10 metres above sea level and already included in the third ring of the Barcelona metropolitan region. It has 2.5 kilometres of fine sandy beaches protected by breakwaters, and its municipal area stretches from the farmland of the Prats de Cunit to the Sant Antoni ranges, to the north. From the 1960s onward its coastal strip filled with second-home developments for families from the Barcelona metropolitan area, and the population grew from a few hundred inhabitants to several thousand. Its castle, a work of popular architecture declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), is located on the Avenida de la Font.
Castle of Cunit
Monument
The castle of Cunit, in the Baix Penedès (Tarragona), gives its name to the town. It is documented since 1031, and between 1131 and 1162 Ramon Berenguer IV ceded it to Dalmau de Cunit; its main construction is believed to date from the 12th century. It preserves three floors with a round-arched portal, a central wrought-iron balcony and a four-storey tower. In the early 20th century it was restored as a country house by Joan Braques i Roger, and since the Second World War it has belonged to a German family. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1988, it is today part of a modern residence built upon its old walls.
