Castle of Cunit Monument · Cunit, Baix Penedès, Tarragona The castle of Cunit, in the Baix Penedès (Tarragona), gives its name to the town. It is documented since 1031, and between 1131 and 1162 Ramon Berenguer IV ceded it to Dalmau de Cunit; its main construction is believed to date from the 12th century. It preserves three floors with a round-arched portal, a central wrought-iron balcony and a four-storey tower. In the early 20th century it was restored as a country house by Joan Braques i Roger, and since the Second World War it has belonged to a German family. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1988, it is today part of a modern residence built upon its old walls.
