Castle of Sarroca Monument · Sarroca de Lleida, Segrià, Lleida Sarroca castle gave rise to the town of Sarroca de Lleida (Segrià) and still dominates the village from above, next to the plaça Major of the old quarter. The base is of Arab construction, perhaps reusing older ashlars from a possible Late Roman Empire fortress built at the edge of Roman Ilerda, although most of the surviving building dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. The oldest remains are the base walls and the underground vaults, while the surviving tower, now in ruins, is of Gothic date, with the windows, doors and arrow-slits of that period.
