What to see and do in Albatàrrec

Albatàrrec
Village
Albatàrrec is a municipality in the Segrià comarca, in the province of Lleida, situated beside the river Segre, which is crossed by the Seròs canal, barely six kilometres from the comarca capital. It is locally known as Albatarri or lo Batarri, a name of disputed origin, perhaps Arabic or pre-Roman. Its economy has traditionally been linked to the cultivation of irrigated sweet fruit, such as pear, apple, nectarine and peach, together with livestock farming. It has 2,331 inhabitants. The village preserves the Espolters castle-palace, the former castle of Albatàrrec, next to the old Agricultural Cooperative, the main example of its heritage.
Castle-Palace of the Espolters
Monument
The Castell-palau dels Espolters, or castle of Albatàrrec, stands on top of a hill overlooking the village of Albatàrrec, in the Segrià (Lleida). It originates in the 13th century, though it was remodelled in the 16th when it was acquired by Francesc d'Espolter, whose son Martí Joan d'Espolter adapted it as a residence; between 1924 and 1926 it was rebuilt again, in a medievalist conception, under the Camon family of Barcelona. It is a rectangular-plan building, with two three-storey wings at right angles and a tower topped by a cornice and circular turrets; the courtyard preserves Gothic arcades and a circular fountain with mythological figures. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 8 November 1988.
