What to see and do in Peramola

Peramola
Village
Peramola is a municipality in the Alt Urgell, in the province of Lérida, dominated by the rocky mass known as the mola de Sant Honorat, which gives it its name. It is home to the schematic cave paintings of the Roc del Rumbau, discovered in 1969 and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998. Peramola Castle, centre of the barony of the same name, belonged in 1071 to Geraldo de Cabrera and passed through various lineages until 1739, when it remained in the hands of the Navarrete family until the end of the Ancien Régime. It has 339 inhabitants and includes the settlements of Castellebre, Cortiuda, Nuncarga and Tragó. The Romanesque parish church of Saint Michael has an apse with Lombard arcading; in Castell-llebre stands the sanctuary church of the Virgin of Castillebrel, from the 11th-12th centuries.
Castle of Peramola
Monument
Castle documented since 1071, when Arnau Mir de Tost left it in his will to his grandson Guerau II de Cabrera, viscount of Àger; head of a barony that also included Tragó de Segre, Cortiuda, Castell-llebre, and Nuncarga. Today it has practically vanished: its exact layout is unknown, and its remains can be surmised in buildings on Carrer Cap de Carrer. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Tower of els Moros de Peramola
Monument
12th-13th-century defense tower, square in plan, 5.40 m per side, with walls one meter thick on its two lower levels, with three floors above the ground floor, arrow slits, and windows; it was inhabited until the 19th century, and a stone on its east façade bears the carved date 1606. Despite the popular name, there is no evidence of Islamic origin. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Roc del Rumbau (Rock)
Curiosity
A rock shelter with cave paintings located in the rocky massif of the Roc del Rumbau, or Roca dels Moros, north of Peramola, which reaches 991 metres at its highest point. The paintings are preserved in a small east-facing cavity, about three metres high by two metres wide, some six metres above the ground, between two mineral water flows that have altered much of the rock. Six schematic figures can be made out: concatenated circles, an indeterminate feature, a stroke, ringed elements with pigment stains, finger markings and a bar. This singularity places the group in the Bronze Age, although there is no firm data to establish its chronology precisely. It is inscribed on the World Heritage list of rock art of the Mediterranean basin of the Iberian Peninsula.
Peramola Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Peramola is celebrated in the municipality that hosts the Roc del Rumbau, a rock shelter with cave paintings inscribed on the World Heritage list of Mediterranean Basin rock art of the Iberian Peninsula.
