Marata Tower Monument · Maçanet de la Selva, Selva, Girona The Torre de Marata, a fortified and walled manor house in Gothic style from the 15th century in the Marata neighbourhood, in Maçanet de la Selva, takes its name from Ramon de Marata, married to Alemanda de Cartellà, whose family is documented since 1287; in 1462 the lord was Francí Miquel, a feudatory of the bishop of Girona, Margarit. Square in plan, with a large elongated defence tower with rounded corners, it preserves three large twin Gothic windows, a main doorway with a double round arch of small voussoirs, and a chapel dedicated to Saint Anne, from 1594. Lightning destroyed part of the tower in 1880 and a fire ravaged the upper floor in 1923. Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1988, it is today in good condition but privately owned, so the interior cannot be visited.
