What to see and do in Riudaura

Riudaura
Village
Riudaura is a mountain municipality in the Garrotxa, in Girona, located at the western end of the comarca, on the border with Osona and the Ripollès, and surrounded by mountains and woods that make it much visited by hikers. The town, with its stone streets and houses, stands in the centre of the valley at 572 metres above sea level. It was under the jurisdiction of the former Augustinian monastery of Santa María, erected in the year 852 by count Wifredo I of Besalú and of which today only a circular tower survives, and of the viscounts of Bas. With 526 inhabitants, it lives from farming, livestock, the textile industry and, increasingly, tourism. Besides the parish church of Santa María, it preserves the church of San Miguel del Mont, from 1779.
Round Tower of Riudaura
Monument
A circular tower, about eleven metres high and five in diameter, standing between a private house and the rectory of Riudaura's parish church; it is the only remaining trace of the old Benedictine priory of Santa Maria de Riudaura. The monastery was founded in the mid-9th century by the count of Girona-Besalú, and its church was consecrated by the bishop of Girona in 858; in 937 Count Sunyer of Barcelona granted it various properties, and shortly afterwards it was attached, as a priory, to the monastery of Santa Maria de la Grassa. Its priors exercised civil jurisdiction over the town. In 1592 it was joined to Sant Pere de Camprodon, by then without a community. The present church dates from 1779; beside it stands the house known as “el monestir”, with the medieval tower, all that remains of the old complex.
