What to see and do in Les Preses

Les Preses
Village
Les Preses is a municipality in the Garrotxa, in the province of Girona, with 1,948 inhabitants, located in the plain of Bas, at the headwaters of the Fluvià river, within the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone natural park. Local legend has it that a great lake once covered the whole plain. The municipality, which includes several settlements such as Bellaire, La Boada and Sant Miquel del Corb, lives from farming and cattle and pig farming, as well as tourism drawn by the Racó volcano, with its circular crater 140 metres in diameter, and by the porous lava formations of the Tosca woods. Among its heritage are the neoclassical church of San Pedro, from the 18th century, with two ceramic-clad bell towers, and the Romanesque churches of San Miguel del Corb and San Martín.
The Tower of Les Preses
Monument
La Torre, in les Preses (Garrotxa), is a fortified manor house, today a farmhouse, made up of two blocks: one tower-shaped, with a gabled roof; the other with a Gothic window, a small voussoir-arched doorway facing the defence tower, and two large windows. The walls, 45 centimetres thick, are partly built of rammed earth; a hayloft and a threshing floor are also preserved. The earliest documentation dates from 1180. In 1358, Ramon de Camps became lord of the Mas Camps and of la Torre, and went on to hold the batllia (bailiff's office) of les Preses, which he reserved for his eldest son Pere. The Montagut family later held the batllia: in 1523 Miquel Marc de Montagut passed it to his son Bartomeu, who around 1550 leased it out until 1564. The tower housed a prison maintained at the expense of the monastery of Sant Benet de Bages.
