Cabanes
Village
Cabanes is an agricultural village of the Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona, about 52 km from the provincial capital, crossed from west to east by the Muga river on flat land between 15 and 30 metres above sea level. The municipality brings together five villages: Cabanes, Les Masies de Dalt, l'Aigüeta, el Forn d'en Gestí and el Pla. Its residents are known as potamolls, from their settling in a flood-prone area. It retains the medieval tower of Cabanes, the monastery of Sant Feliu de Cadins, and the remains of the old 19th-century dynamite factory, between the Muga and the Llobregat. Every 24 June, the feast of St John, the Cabanyada is celebrated, with a fair and reed-pipe music. In 2025 it has 995 inhabitants.
