Canonry of Santa Maria de Vilabertran Monument · Vilabertran, Alt Empordà, Girona Augustinian monastic complex of Vilabertran, in the Alt Empordà, founded around 1060 by Pere Rigald; a donation of land in 1069 laid the foundations of the monastery, and the church was consecrated in 1100. It is one of the finest examples of a Romanesque canonry complex in Catalonia, with a basilical plan of three naves, three semicircular apses and a three-storey bell tower with twin windows. The cloister, trapezoidal in plan, is enclosed by arcaded galleries of eight round arches per side, and the abbot's palace, from the 15th century, adds a round-arched portal and trefoil Gothic windows. In 1295 it hosted the wedding of King James II of Aragon to Blanca de Nápoles. Declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in 1930, it today belongs to the Museu d'Història de Catalunya.
