What to see and do in la Vajol

la Vajol
Village
La Vajol is the highest village in the Alt Empordà, at 546 metres above sea level, on the border with France, with forests of cork oaks, beeches and chestnuts; it lived off cork and steatite mines, and today lives off dry farming and cattle raising. It is linked to the Republican Retirada of 1939: in mid-1937 Juan Negrín, head of the government of the Republic, chose its talc mines to store the Republic's gold and works from the Prado, and built over them a three-storey building that is still preserved. In the last days of the war Negrín settled here, while Companys and the lehendakari Aguirre did so in nearby Agullana; on 1 February 1939 Manuel Azaña arrived, and la Vajol was the last capital of the Republic before exile. It has 112 inhabitants (INE 2025).
The crossing of the coll de Lli
Historical milestone
Over this col of la Vajol crossed into France, on 5 February 1939, president Manuel Azaña and, hours later, Lluís Companys and the lehendakari José Antonio Aguirre; the village also kept in the Canta mine the artistic heritage evacuated from Madrid.
