L'Ametlla del Vallès
Village
L'Ametlla del Vallès is a municipality in the south of the Vallès Oriental, in the province of Barcelona, a traditional summer resort that preserves the Renaissance manor house of Can Draper, the parish of San Ginés Mártir, the Modernista town hall and the hermitage of San Nicolás. Its first mention dates from the year 903, when Emma, abbess of the monastery of San Juan de las Abadesas, held lordship over the parish of Sant Genís de l'Amigadala, the Latin name of present-day Ametlla; it was consecrated in 932, with about 150 inhabitants. At the end of the 9th century it passed to the county of Barcelona, and in 1059 Count Ramón Berenguer I incorporated it into the barony of Montbui, whose castle preserves wall remains built in opus spicatum. It was consecrated again in 1123.
Can Draper
Monument
Can Draper is a fortified farmhouse in the south of the municipality of l'Ametlla del Vallès (Vallès Oriental), listed as Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) since 1949, which gives its name to the municipality's main population center. Documented since 1151 as Mas Barceló, it took its current name in 1393, when Ramon Draper married the heiress of the house; its present appearance, with the enclosed courtyard and the protective tower, is due to the 16th-century extension, and the tower bears the engraved date of its construction, 26 May 1574, by Jaume Draper. The farmhouse preserves Gothic elements such as windows, portals and the chapel of the Virgin of the Rosary, whose Gothic altarpiece disappeared during the Civil War of 1936. Within the estate an artificial ice house from the 17th-19th centuries is also preserved.
