Barromán
Village
Barromán is a village in the comarca of La Moraña, in Ávila, beside the Zapardiel river and its tributary the Valtodano. According to popular tradition, its name would be an old Castilian contraction of Lugar de Román; it was incorporated into Castile and repopulated by Castilian settlers in the 11th century, with no settlement known prior to the Reconquest. Camilo José Cela passed through here on the journey he recounts in Judíos, moros y cristianos. Its Church of the Assumption stands on a rise overlooking the hamlet; the tower-apse, Mudéjar and from the 12th or 13th century, may earlier have been a watchtower or part of a castle, while the main nave is from the 16th century. It has around 174 inhabitants.
