Sinlabajos
Village
Sinlabajos is a village of Ávila province, with about 134 inhabitants, in the comarca of La Moraña, near Arévalo, set on a small rise following the usual pattern of the villages of this plain. Its church of San Pelayo, from the 16th century, was raised over an earlier Romanesque-Mudéjar basilica, of which only remains survive at the base of the tower and in some foundations; built in brick without decoration, it holds inside, beneath the ribbed vault of the polygonal Capilla Mayor, a Christ figure strongly influenced by the sculptor Alonso Berruguete. On the night of Holy Saturday, residents sing the song of La Despedida. The writer Camilo José Cela mentioned the village in his book Judíos, moros y cristianos, about a journey he made through the lands of Segovia and Ávila between 1946 and 1952.
