What to see and do in Villar del Río

Villar del Río
Village
Villar del Río is a municipality in the province of Soria, in the comarca of Tierras Altas, bathed by the río Cidacos and situated south of the Camero Viejo and Hayedo de Santiago sierras, within protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network such as the Sierra de Urbión. It formed part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Yanguas, under the lordship of the Marquis of Aguilar, and was called Villaseca Bajera well into the 19th century. In the late 20th century it incorporated the former municipalities of Bretún, La Cuesta, Diustes, Huérteles and Villar de Maya. It has two sites declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2005, Fuente la Dehesa and Fuentescalvo. It has 155 inhabitants, though the main settlement barely exceeded 69 in 2010.
The Route of the Dinosaur Footprints
Curiosity
The Ruta de las Icnitas runs through the Tierras Altas region, in the north of Soria province, linking ichnite sites — fossilised dinosaur footprints — considered among the oldest in Spain, although similar sediments exist in Burgos, La Rioja or Teruel. The municipality contains eight archaeological zones declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2005, with tridactyl ichnites of carnivorous dinosaurs fossilised in Lower Cretaceous sandstones. Villar del Río is an obligatory point of passage both on the driving route, divided into a western itinerary through Los Campos, Santa Cruz de Yanguas and Bretún, and an eastern one through Matasejún, San Pedro Manrique and Ventosa de San Pedro, and on the walking trails that link up with the sites of Serrantes and Valdegén, in Bretún.
Thirteen villages in a single municipality
Curiosity
Bretún, Camporredondo, Diustes, Huérteles, La Cuesta, La Laguna, Montaves, Santa Cecilia, Valduérteles, Villar de Maya, Aldealcardo and Villaseca Bajera were added to the municipality between 1971 and 1981.
The beech forest of Diustes
Nature
In this outlying village grows one of the southernmost beech woods of the Sistema Ibérico, within the Natura 2000 Network areas that cover close to 16% of the municipal district, between the Sierra de Urbión and the valley of the Cidacos.
