The Route of the Dinosaur Footprints Curiosity · Villar del Río, Tierras Altas, Soria Image of Villar del Río, not of the place itself. The Ruta de las Icnitas runs through the Tierras Altas region, in the north of Soria province, linking ichnite sites — fossilised dinosaur footprints — considered among the oldest in Spain, although similar sediments exist in Burgos, La Rioja or Teruel. The municipality contains eight archaeological zones declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2005, with tridactyl ichnites of carnivorous dinosaurs fossilised in Lower Cretaceous sandstones. Villar del Río is an obligatory point of passage both on the driving route, divided into a western itinerary through Los Campos, Santa Cruz de Yanguas and Bretún, and an eastern one through Matasejún, San Pedro Manrique and Ventosa de San Pedro, and on the walking trails that link up with the sites of Serrantes and Valdegén, in Bretún.
