What to see and do in Vozmediano

Vozmediano
Village
Vozmediano is a Sorian hamlet of 29 residents, in the district of the Moncayo and at the foot of this massif, 2,316 metres high; here the source of the río Queiles wells up, from a one-metre mouth that releases around 1,500 litres of water per second, making it one of the highest continuous-flow springs in Europe. Its waters feed a fish farm and three hydroelectric plants before continuing towards the pantano del Val and flowing into the Ebro, at Tudela, after a 44 km course. Its historical importance is linked to its castle, raised in the mid-12th century after the Reconquista, when these lands passed several times between the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon until the peace of Valladolid of 1453 fixed the border.
The Source of the Queiles River
Nature
The Queiles river rises in Vozmediano (Soria), where the water gushes forth from a chasm at the foot of the Moncayo, at an altitude of 920 metres; this spring is the second most abundant in Europe, with an average flow of one thousand five hundred litres per second. Downstream it receives the río del Val or Cailes, which rises in Ólvega and irrigates Ágreda, forms notable escarpments in the conglomerates of Tarazona and, after that town, widens its course to irrigate an area of close to 10,000 hectares. The Queiles is regulated by the Val reservoir, one of the most affected by eutrophication in the Ebro basin due to discharges from the Ágreda-Ólvega treatment plant. It then crosses Aragon and Navarre, running 44 kilometres before flowing into the Ebro at Tudela.
The Castle of Vozmediano
Monument
A 15th-century Gothic fortress with a rectangular inner precinct and keep, protected by an outer wall with square towers and artillery bastions; its consolidated ruins now house the cemetery. It is the easternmost castle in the province of Soria; its gigantic keep, raised at one of the corners, retained interior arches that supported several floors. The wall, of thick and solid lime-and-rubble construction, combines small battlements with square towers and a later round artillery tower. It is protected under the generic declaration of the Decree of 22 April 1949 and under Law 16/1985 on Spanish Historical Heritage.
The Border That Changed Hands
Historical milestone
The place passed from Castilian to Aragonese hands during the war between the two crowns, until the peace of Valladolid of 1453 definitively fixed the boundary; in 1591 troops arrived to put down fresh revolts.
San Sebastián in August
Activity
The village moves its patron's festival to the third weekend of August, when the descendants of those who left come back: the 2025 census gave twenty-nine households against the 312 of 1842.
The Vegetables of the Queiles Riverside
Food and drink
The spring's constant flow makes it possible to irrigate the terraced vegetable plots of the valley, which from the source down to Tudela produce greens and vegetables in one of the most fertile meadowlands of the Iberian System.
