What to see and do in Dévanos

Dévanos
Village
Dévanos is a Sorian village of 72 inhabitants situated on the slopes of the sierra de Alcarama, on the border with La Rioja, with the río Añamaza running through its municipal area. Its name, of uncertain origin, may derive from the ancient Tabanium, linked to a water deity, or from the Latin dei-panis, "God's bread". Beside the palace of the counts of Villarreal it preserves the neo-Gothic hermitage of the Virgen del Castillejo, raised over the old cemetery at the expense of José Hernández Martínez, a canon of Zaragoza born in the village, and inaugurated on 8 September 1922. Part of its municipal area, with thyme, rosemary and the griffon vulture among its fauna and flora, is included in the Site of Community Importance of Cigudosa-San Felices.
The Neo-Gothic Hermitage of the Castillejo
Monument
Inaugurated on 8 September 1922, this hermitage dedicated to the Virgen del Castillejo is a Neo-Gothic work raised already in the twentieth century, uncommon in the province's rural religious architecture.
The Palace of the Counts of Villarrea
Monument
The village's palatial house, which also preserves the church of the Virgen del Patrocinio with its titular image presiding over the main altarpiece; both buildings sustain the heritage of a place of 72 households.
Tabanium, the God of the Waters
Curiosity
The place name has been derived from the Latin name Tabanium, in honour of a deity of the waters, or else from the expression dei-panis, God's bread: two etymologies for a village of springs.
The Vultures of the Añamaza
Nature
The municipal district includes 1,065 hectares of the protected site of Cigudosa-San Felices, with cliffs where griffon vultures breed and woodland for small game with wild boar, rabbit and red-legged partridge.
