What to see and do in Borobia

Borobia
Village
Borobia is a village of 218 inhabitants situated beside the río Manubles, a tributary of the Jalón, on the border with Zaragoza. In 1395 Henry III granted the hamlet to his steward Juan Hurtado de Mendoza, whose family kept it until 1429, when it passed to the Luna family, Marshals of Castile. Of its medieval castle, raised on a hill near the centre of the village, only a mound of earth and remains of towers and walls survive; beside these ruins an astronomical observatory was set up, with a five-metre dome and an automated 40-centimetre telescope, devoted to public outreach. Magnesite is extracted from the mine in the municipal area. The patronal festival is held on the second weekend of September, and the Concordia is celebrated on the third weekend of August.
Borobia in the Hands of the Hurtado de Mendoza Family
Historical milestone
Enrique III handed the town over that year to Juan Hurtado de Mendoza; his family held it until 1429 and afterwards it passed to the Luna, marshals of Castile, in an area disputed between the two crowns.
The Magnesite Mines
Curiosity
The municipality works deposits of magnesite, the magnesium carbonate used in refractories and in industry; beside one of the hermitages there were also old iron ore workings.
The Astronomical Observatory
Activity
A village of a little over two hundred inhabitants keeps an observatory with a forty-centimetre telescope, audiovisual classrooms and outreach activities, taking advantage of skies almost free of light pollution.
The Juniper Groves of Ciria-Borobia
Nature
The municipal district, at 1,130 metres and watered by the river Manubles, includes this protected habitat of Spanish juniper, a relict formation adapted to extreme cold and to the poor soils of the high Moncayo.
