What to see and do in Beratón

Beratón
Village
Beratón is a municipality in the province of Soria (Castile and León), at the foot of the Moncayo, on the border with Zaragoza, which makes it the easternmost town in Castile and León. At 1,391 metres above sea level it is the highest municipality in the province, and barely 38 residents live there. Here the Isuela and Araviana rivers rise, and a good part of its municipal area, covered in Pyrenean oaks, poplars and holm oaks, is protected within the Natura 2000 network by the sierra del Moncayo. Local tradition recalls that three bandits died on 8 February 1874 while raiding the village, an episode recorded in the Romance de Beratón. The municipality preserves the Gothic church of San Pedro Apóstol, the hermitage of San Roque and the Cruz de Canto, a wayside cross at the crossroads towards Borobia and Añón.
The Highest Village in Soria
Curiosity
At 1,391 metres of altitude, Beratón is the highest inhabited settlement in the province and the easternmost point of Castilla y León; in 1910 it reached four hundred households and today it does not exceed forty.
The Source of the Isuela and the Araviana
Nature
Two rivers rise in the municipal district: the Isuela, which runs down towards the Ebro through Aragonese lands, and the Araviana, which runs towards the interior of Soria; the municipality thus divides its waters between two slopes.
The Muela of Beratón
Nature
A limestone platform that rises to 1,550 metres above the village, with rock walls and scree; more than half the municipal district is protected within the Sierra del Moncayo site of the Natura 2000 Network.
The Church of San Pedro Apóstol
Monument
A Gothic church that presides over the highest village in the province, accompanied by the hermitage of San Roque and by the Alto de San Mateo, a hill on which a possible Celtic settlement has been noted.
The 17 August Community Meal
Activity
The festivities are concentrated on 15 and 16 August and close on the 17th with a meal at which the whole village sits down, the only date in the year when the census is multiplied by ten.
The Lamb of the Moncayo Pastures
Food and drink
Extensive stock rearing is still the economic base of the highest village in Soria: the flocks that use the high pastures give the lamb roasted at the festivals and the milk for the home-made cheeses.
