The Castle of Almenar Monument · Almenar de Soria, Campo de Gómara, Soria The castle of Almenar de Soria dominates the grain-growing region of Campo de Gómara from a hilltop and belonged to the counts of Gómara. Its keep preserves walls dating back to the 10th century; already in the 15th century the rectangular inner enclosure and the battlements of the outer wall were raised, and a century later the towers were altered. At its peak it had two enclosures, with a residential area formed by a gallery and a staircase added later. It was a residence of Charles II and Philip V, inspired the poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer for several of his Leyendas, and scenes from the series El Cid were filmed there. It is one of the best-preserved castles in the entire province of Soria. Photo: santiago lopez-pastor from España (CC BY-SA 2.0) What to see and do in Almenar de Soria
