Maello
Village
Maello is an abulense town of about 713 inhabitants that belonged to the sexmo de San Martín, within the Tierra de Segovia, until the provincial reorganisation of 1833 transferred it to the province of Ávila. Its name, documented as El Maello in 1247, is related to the wild apple tree. It preserves the church of San Juan Bautista, with a Gothic star vault and three 17th-century oriental ivory carvings that featured in Las Edades del Hombre. It celebrates several festivals throughout the year, among them that of the Rosario, on the first weekend of October, with five days of encierros, corridas and dances that begin with the traditional route of the peñas.
