What to see and do in Brañosera

Brañosera
Village
A hamlet in the Montaña Palentina comarca, on the southern slope of the sierra de Híjar, with around 250 inhabitants; it is held to be Spain's first town council, since count Munio Núñez and his wife Argilo granted it a carta puebla on 13 October 824, when the place was called Brannia-Ossaria, land of brañas and bears. It forms part of the Montaña Palentina natural park, dominated by the macizo de Valdecebollas, where the río Rubagón rises, amid forests of beech, oak, holly and yew that still shelter brown bear and capercaillie. The municipality also groups together the localities of Orbó, Salcedillo, Valberzoso and Vallejo de Orbó. It preserves the Romanesque church of Santa Eulalia and red sandstone quarries.
Charter of Brañosera
Historical milestone
Count Munio Núñez granted on 13 October 824 a settlement charter to the inhabitants of this valley of the then Kingdom of Asturias, setting out their rights and obligations; it is considered the first charter in the history of Spain.
The oldest municipality in Spain
Curiosity
The settlement charter of the year 824 formally constituted the first documented local administrative organisation on the peninsula, from which the present municipalities derive; for this reason Brañosera claims to be the country's first municipal council.
