What to see and do in Lucillo

Lucillo
Village
Lucillo is a Maragato municipality of about 360 inhabitants, situated at 1,216 metres in the mountains of León, whose territory brings together, besides the eponymous locality, those of Boisán, Busnadiego, Chana de Somoza, Filiel, Molinaferrera, Piedras Albas and Pobladura de la Sierra. It preserves petroglyphs with labyrinths, cup marks and human figures that could date from between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago, several of them reused in churches and other buildings of the area, as well as the Roman channels that, coming from the nearby Monte Teleno, supplied water to the Roman mines of Las Médulas. In the mid-19th century the town, already the head of the municipality, had 140 houses recorded.
Petroglyphs of Peña Fadiel
Monument
Two large diabase rocks located at around 1,163 metres in the district of Filiel preserve engravings from the Bronze Age; they form the main open-air rock art site in the whole of the province of León. The panels show a wide grouping of cup marks, grooves, circular and oval figures, as well as labyrinths, symbols that can be related to rock art of the Atlantic style. Their importance lies above all in the quantity and variety of circular engravings in the shape of a labyrinth, a figure of which, until their discovery, few known prehistoric examples existed.
Discovery of the petroglyphs of Peña Fadiel
Historical milestone
In 2008 the amateur researcher Juan Carlos Campos Gómez came upon the Peña Fadiel carvings by chance and identified them as prehistoric; subsequent studies described motifs with no known parallel in the northwest.
Hermitage of San Mamed de Lucillo
Monument
It stands on the San Mamed knoll over an earlier building and that, in turn, over the remains of a castro inhabited in the First and Second Iron Ages; it is the only survivor of the village's four hermitages.
Church of San Martín de Lucillo
Monument
The parish church of Lucillo, in the heart of the upper Maragatería, which preserves an eighteenth-century altarpiece; the church dominates a stone-built village raised at the foot of the outliers of Monte Teleno.
Hillfort of la Corona del Castro de Filiel
Nature
A fortified enclosure that the residents of Filiel know as the Corona del Castro, one of the many sites in this municipal district where abundant Roman-period remains linked to gold mining are also documented.
Émurias of Chana de Somoza (Roman mining spoil heaps)
Curiosity
The residents call émurias the heaps of stones that dot the district of Chana de Somoza: they are the spoil accumulated by Roman gold washing, the same technique that stripped the hillsides of Las Médulas.
Hillfort of la Magdalena de Chana de Somoza
Nature
A site in the district of Chana de Somoza where materials of the High and Late Imperial periods have been identified, evidence of the long Roman occupation of these gold-bearing slopes of the Teleno.
Mount Teleno
Nature
At 2,188 metres it is the highest summit of the Montes de León and of the Galician-Leonese massif; its bulk, snow-covered much of the year, can be seen from all over the Maragatería and from the banks of the Órbigo.
The god Mars Tileno
Historical milestone
In Roman times, Rome assimilated the native deity of Monte Teleno, in Lucillo, to its own god Mars in his agrarian aspect: the Leonese inscriptions dedicated to Marti Tileno are one of the best-documented examples of religious syncretism in the northwest.
Ascent of Teleno from the upper Maragatería
Activity
The villages of Molinaferrera, Busnadiego and Pobladura de la Sierra are the classic starting points for the summit of the Teleno, a climb over quartzite scree with views over La Cabrera, El Bierzo and the meseta.
Androlla maragata (Maragatería sausage)
Food and drink
A relative of the botillo made with boned rib and a high proportion of pork rind, smoked and cured by the dry, cold winds that sweep the flanks of the Teleno; its reddish colour comes from the paprika in the marinade.
