What to see and do in Castrillo de la Valduerna

Castrillo de la Valduerna
Village
Castrillo de la Valduerna is a village in the comarca of La Bañeza, in the province of León, on the south-eastern foothills of the sierra del Teleno, in the valley of the río Duerna, at 904 metres; it has 135 inhabitants and includes the hamlet of Velilla de la Valduerna. It was settled from the Bronze Age by the Orniaci, and in its surroundings the hillforts of Coronas de Castrillo, Coronas de Velilla and Castrillón are preserved. The Romans exploited gold deposits here by sifting the sands. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the lordship of the Bazán family, centred on Palacios de la Valduerna, later integrated into the marquisate of La Bañeza. Formerly called Castrillo de los Nabos, it today grows raspberries and asparagus and raises trout at the Las Zayas fish farm.
