What to see and do in Santiago Millas

Santiago Millas
Village
Santiago Millas is a village of around 350 inhabitants at 932 metres above sea level, in the province of León, declared a historic ensemble in 1999, with large houses built by the Maragato muleteers. The municipality groups together, besides Santiago Millas itself as its seat, the settlements of Morales del Arcediano, Oteruelo de la Valduerna, Piedralba and Valdespino de Somoza. It sits on two quarters spread across the slope of a hill with two summits, between which a path runs; documented since 1334 as Santiago de Mielles, its name may allude precisely to that twin shape of the land. Its former school in the Barrio de Arriba now houses the Museo de la Arriería Maragata.

Monument
A Maragato village of two quarters set on the slope of a twin-peaked hill, with muleteers' houses, great gateways and cobbled yards. The ensemble was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 1 October 1999.

Curiosity
The place name, documented as Santiago de Mielles in 1334, is linked to the Latin gemellus, twin: the village is split between two quarters set on the two summits of one and the same hill, 955 and 938 metres high, separated by a track.
