Val de San Lorenzo
Village
Val de San Lorenzo is a Maragato village in the province of León which, together with Lagunas de Somoza and Val de San Román (divided into the districts of Sobrao, Quintana and Cantosales), forms the municipality, with around 480 inhabitants. It is one of the towns of the Maragatería comarca where popular and folk traditions have best been preserved, and its main festival, La Carballeda, celebrated on the first Sunday of September, is declared of regional tourist interest. The village is famous for its craft weaving of cloths, blankets and other garments made of pure virgin wool, a textile industry to which the Museo El Batán is devoted. In the mid-19th century it had 202 houses, according to Pascual Madoz's geographical dictionary.
