What to see and do in Castrillo de Cabrera

Castrillo de Cabrera
Village
Castrillo de Cabrera, Castriellu in Cabreirés, is a Leonese hamlet of about a hundred inhabitants at 1,062 metres, in the comarca of La Cabrera, with the hamlets of Marrubio, Nogar, Odollo, Saceda and Noceda de Cabrera. It is divided into two quarters, de Arriba and de Abajo, separated by about 800 metres of road known as El Barrial; on its outskirts castros are preserved along with three old Roman channels that carried water to the mining works of Las Médulas, in El Bierzo. Madoz counted 250 residents there in the 19th century; today it lives on the slate quarries of the Marrubio area, preserves earthen houses with stone-slab roofs, and celebrates the Virgen del Castro, its patroness, on 15 August.
Yew grove of Odollo
Nature
A yew wood growing on the slopes above Odollo, one of the most notable stands of this protected species in the León mountains; the yew, extremely slow-growing, has survived here both charcoal burning and the teeth of livestock.
Millenary yew of Noceda de Cabrera
Nature
Noceda de Cabrera, with barely a dozen residents, guards a thousand-year-old yew considered one of the finest specimens in all of Castile and León, rooted beside the village's slate houses.
Hermitage of Santa Lucía de Odollo
Monument
A small hermitage at Odollo built in slate, one of the three that dot the municipality along with those of El Castro and El Cristo; the town council lists it among the assets that preserve altarpieces and images of value.
Roman bridge of Nogar
Monument
A masonry bridge of Roman origin that crosses the watercourse as it passes Nogar, one of the few remnants of the old road network that served the gold workings of the river Cabrera valley.
Underground slate mine of Odollo
Curiosity
Odollo is home to the only underground slate working in La Cabrera: while the rest of the comarca's quarries work open-cast, leaving grey spoil heaps on the hillside, here it is extracted in galleries beneath the mountain.
Rye-thatched houses of Castrillo de Cabrera
Curiosity
Cabrera architecture is preserved almost intact at Castrillo: houses with wooden galleries, barns roofed with rye straw, dovecotes, chimneys and free-standing ovens, all built with slate slabs.
Restored forge of Marrubio
Curiosity
Marrubio has recovered its council forge and its public fountain, two of the communal structures that organised life in these slate villages before emigration emptied the comarca almost completely.
Mill and dovecote of Nogar
Monument
Nogar preserves its restored flour mill and a dovecote, pieces of the traditional Cabrera farming cycle that have been rehabilitated alongside the village's Roman bridge, on the floor of the Cabrera valley.
Botillo of La Cabrera
Food and drink
A winter cured meat made with pork rib, tail, tongue and backbone marinated with salt, garlic and paprika and stuffed into the large intestine; smoked and cured, it is known and cooked in La Cabrera just as it is in El Bierzo.
