Village
A hamlet in the comarca of la Bureba, in Burgos, with 23 inhabitants; its name appears in medieval documents as Villadenia or Villam Denia, of possible Roman origin, “Villa de Ennio or Ennia.” In 1222 Queen Urraca López de Haro, widow of Fernando II de León, founded there the Cistercian monastery of Santa María la Real, today in ruins, on which the village jurisdictionally depended as a manorial domain even after the towns of la Bureba became independent of Briviesca in 1662; the archive of the Merindad de La Bureba was kept in Vileña itself. From the monastery come the retablo de la Asunción, the work of Pedro López de Gámiz, and a fresco of the Juicio Final, today in museums in Burgos, along with the tombs of the founding queen and the Rojas family.
