Battle of la Morcuera Historical milestone · Bugedo, Ebro, Burgos Image of Bugedo, not of the place itself. The battle of la Morcuera was fought on 9 August in the year 865 in the gorge of the Hoz de la Morcuera, between Foncea and Bugedo, near Miranda de Ebro, when the Cordoban army of Mohamed I surprised the Christian troops of Ordoño I, defended by the Castilian count Rodrigo, and advanced plundering as far as Salinas de Añana. Rodrigo tried to cut off their retreat at Pancorbo, but they escaped through the basin of the Oja river. The defeat, one of the setbacks suffered by the early county of Castile against the Cordoban razzias advancing up the Ebro corridor, halted the resettlement of the Central Plateau, a task that would be continued by Ordoño's son, Alfonso III, and allowed Mohamed I to take advantage of the loss of the fortresses of Cerezo del Río Tirón, Ibrillos and Grañón to launch new attacks in 866 and 867. 865 Photo: Zarateman (CC0) What to see and do in Bugedo
