What to see and do in Torrecilla del Monte

Torrecilla del Monte
Village
Torrecilla del Monte is a hamlet of 79 inhabitants in the Arlanza comarca, Burgos, through whose municipal land runs the Ángel river, a tributary of the Cubillo. Its name betrays a military origin: it arose around the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries, when, after the founding of the city and castle of Burgos, the county sought to secure the line of the Arlanza river on the way to the Duero, settling Mozarabic communities that had arrived from Andalusia. Torrecilla formed part of the chain of strongholds built to protect them, between Castrovido and Palenzuela. The addition "del Monte" recalls that of Valzalamio, a large expanse of holm oak and oak woodland granted in 935 to the monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña. The hamlet celebrates San Pelayo on 26 June and Santiago and Santa Ana at the end of July.
