Santa Inés
Village
Santa Inés is a town of 153 inhabitants on the banks of the Arlanza river, in the comarca of the same name and near Lerma and Covarrubias. It is mentioned in 1062 in the cartulary of the monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza as villam sancti genesii, the name from which the current one derives; in 1587 it was still called San Ginés, and already by 1591, Santa Inés de Lerma. It lives from the farming of cereals, vineyards and vegetables and from sheep farming, and is known for its varieties of mushrooms, among them the níscalo (saffron milk cap) and the crispilla. Its Gothic church, actually dedicated to San Justo and San Pastor, holds a Romanesque baptismal font over a metre in diameter and a pre-Churrigueresque main altarpiece carved by Ventura Fernández between 1685 and 1686.
